Seeing a need like this in the community, Mercy hospitals opened up a shelter for 25 women and their children, allowing them to stay for as long as 30 days. They have now provided over 80,000 nights at the shelter.
They also provide low cost and free medical services. With a core value that believes that everyone is entitled to access to health care, they opened a health center that serves Janesville, IL and Beloit, IL. They now give care to those who are uninsured as well as people who may be under-insured. Physicians are also volunteers at this clinic, proving a dedication of the hospital staff to the community at large.
Mercy hospitals are also providing support groups in areas where chronic illnesses are a problem, and opening up a resource to those who have similar problems. There are almost 50 such groups in Wisconsin and Illinois and all at no cost or very low cost. This resource is invaluable to helping people to help each other, in order to move forward in their lives. Many former participants come back in order to help others and show their gratitude for those who helped them. Fostering an environment like this helps the community as a whole.
