Advice on writing the essay?

Hi!

I am currently attempting to apply as a transfer to East Carolina University but I’ve had a bad run in college. At the first college I attended I had a 1.54 GPA because of health reasons, and my last college wouldn’t let me withdraw for health reasons. They weren’t “good enough.” At my current college, a community college, I’m doing pretty well. I took two Intersession courses (intense 3-week classes) and got a 3.25 GPA. Currently, I do not have anything less than an A in any of my spring semester classes.

How do I convey in an essay that although I did awful at my last school, I’m doing really well at my current school and I’m finally in an academic environment that I can succeed in while also working full-time to support myself (I’m currently living on my own, away from my family 300 miles away).

Help? I really want to write an amazing essay to increase my chances of acceptance.

If I were you, I would spell it out clearly: health reasons interfered with your studies initially, as did certain bureaucratic issues. However, once you were well, you took control of your life again, performing up to your potential, as indicated by your GPA doubling (and then some). Note that this is just my opinion, but it does seem like most universities like admissions essays that show perseverance and overcoming obstacles.

You may also want to call ECU and talk to an admissions counselor to get a read of what they’re looking for in an essay for transfer students with shaky past grades. You’d be amazed at how forthcoming admissions people can be. Best of luck.
