Alcohol Consumption And Personal Health

Did you know that drinking wine, especially red wine, has been associated with a wide range of health benefits? Many of the benefits associated with drinking wine are the result of an antioxidant known as resveratrol, which is found in the skins of red grapes. Antioxidants have anti-aging effects and are also good for the heart. Red wine can also reduce the incidence of kidney stones, ovarian cancer, and strokes. Drinking red wine has also been associated with a reduction of LDL (bad) cholesterol production, thereby reducing he risk of heart disease, through the presence of polyphenol compounds. Researchers believe that the low incidence of heart attacks in France may be related to the popularity of wine in that country.

In the past, it was only believed that red wine held some health benefits, yet recent studies suggest that white wine can also have some health benefits. Some studies have even found that moderate intake of white or red wine can increase life expectancy by as much as five years due to the health benefits that they provide. However, it should be noted that wine is the only alcoholic beverage that has been associated with health benefits – things like beer and other spirits have not.

When incorporated with a balanced and healthy diet, drinking wine in moderation will benefit your health. They key word there is moderation. Most men should limit themselves to no more than two glasses of wine every day and women should stop after one glass. (a glass of wine is defined as about 5 ounces). Notice how this is not an “average” of one to two glasses a day. Do not think you can drink 10 glasses of wine in one day and avoid it for the rest of the week and have everything even out over time. That is not how it works. The health benefits are eliminated if and when you consume more than you should.

Drinking occasionally throughout the week should not harm your health, and can in fact be beneficial for your heart, but you should still aim to stay ‘alcohol free’ for several days each week. Even those who acknowledge the potential health benefits of a drink also recognize that falling into a routine of drinking can be dangerous. It is also important to recognize that you should not drive after having even just one or two glasses of wine.

Finally, it goes without saying that consuming alcohol every day can become a problem. A lot of people wrongly assume that the only people with drinking problems are those that stagger out of a bar every night and wake up with a hangover every day. That is not necessarily true. If you drink most nights of the week or frequently have more than two or three drinks while drinking, you might have an alcohol dependency issue. In addition to the possible negative health consequences, this type of behavior can get you in trouble with the law very easily. Save yourself the trouble of ever having to hire a DUI lawyer by never drinking and driving. Even people that stay under the legal limit of 0.08 can be arrested for driving under the influence and will need DUI attorneys to help get them out of trouble.
